I wanted to follow up with the several of you who were also touched by my humbling experience and offered to help. Thank you for your generosity!
One problem we have is that it is very expensive and unreliable to ship items directly here. Chances are anything sent would get stolen along the way. My mom is flying here next month. She already has a few toys she's bringing so her suitcase space will be limited, but she could bring a couple more small things with her. If you have something you'd like to send, let me know and I'll email the address to you.
I'm also going to find out what other items are needed, such as church clothes, and how we could go about getting them here safely for a massive long distance service project. Wouldn't that be great?
In the meantime though, I guess the whole point is to be grateful for what we have. I think we would all agree that we have much more than we really need, and could part with quite a bit to those who are in need. While it may not be realistic to send a lot of toys, clothes, or food to the people here, there are people in need everywhere. Go find them!

well said...
this reminds me of my friend who worked at a soup kitchen for a year and she said it was always a hassle to manage the massive amount of volunteers during the holidays and that some people who wanted to volunteer on their birthday but couldn't because there were enough volunteers - were actually angry. let's spread the wealth! :)
I rmember sending packages to my brothers on their missions to Mexico (I know Brazil is different) but if we put pictures of Jesus on the package then they were left alone. Maybe you could try that.
Hey Mary,
I just have to tell you that I love reading up on you and your adventures abroad! You are amazing and I wish I would have gotten to know you better before you moved! Your experience is truly inspiring! We all miss you!
(I need to go to bed now!)
Love,
Annie
That's fantastic, Mary. I wish there was a reliable way to get toys sent there- heaven knows we have boxes and boxes of stuff Brody never plays with any more.
If you find a way to organize a clothes drive, let me know! I have tons of pre-Brody dresses that I've hung on to, thinking I'll fit in them some day. (Snort!)
