I had my first Portuguese lesson today which was good as I'm a little overwhelmed with trying to communicate with people. It's been great having Matt around all week, but next week's going to be different story when he starts work again. My high school Spanish training is coming back muy rapido, which helps a little, but also somewhat complicates my ability to learn Portuguese.
I had a little melt down on Day 3, still plagued with exhaustion and a stark realization that my family is going to starve because I don't know how to cook anything here.
On Day 4, we walked to the nearby market where I went in alone and bought a few items without Matt's help or translation. That was a huge feat for me. I've now managed to make two dinners, and am finding more stores with more familiar ingredients. We won't starve after all. I guess if all else fails, we have plenty of fruit to choose from!
I'm doing much better and the rest of this week has been great- getting settled, learning the ropes, exploring our neighborhood, relaxing on the beach, and pretty much melting in the heat.
This is going to be quite an adventure, more than I could have ever imagined, but we're having a great time!

P.S. How long are you going to be in Brazil?
P.P.S. I really want to know how you like your stroller. We're in the market for a double.
Yay. We're so glad you guys made it there and are doing great! I'd love to go to the beach in February, how nice!
Mary - our neighbors here in Istanbul are from Sao Paulo and the guy's wife probably has TONS of recipes you can make. She is a great cook (her husband is a greta eater), so I will see if she can email you a few suggestions. Her English is so-so -- maybe you guys cna email back in forth in English and Portguese and practice some language learning. I am going to give her your email address.
Let me know if you need any "settling in" advice. Cooking took us 2-3 mths to nail down, and I still find myself going back to my old favorites because I can't think of what to cook. Good luck out there!
Wow! You ARE a brave woman! What a stressful adventure. I'm glad the traveling part is over. I can totally relate, as we went to a "new world" in the Cayman Islands. It was so foreign to me and overwhelming at first! I felt like I couldn't speak the language, although it was English, because their Caribbean accents were so thick! You are a trooper. I know it will get better. It did for me. You might not believe it now, but you'll probably grow to love the people and style so much that it will be hard to leave! It just takes some time to get to that point, though! Hang in there!
Mary: Your stories are bringing back so many memories of our adventure in Romania. The shopping definitely took some time to get used to. I think we ate bread and eggs for about 2 weeks before we figured things out. Hang in there - things will better!!
You made it!!! You are so adventurous and I can't wait to hear all about it out there- good luck and have fun!
Mary,
You are one brave girl! You will come out of this so much stronger and this will be such a fun adventure for your family that you'll always cherish. Hang in there, everything gets easier with time.
Love Lauren Castro
